Why I Stopped Trading.
Eighteen months ago I switched from discretionary to fully systematic. Here's what each step actually taught me, stripped of the gloss.
- Going systematic moved the work away from chart time and into research, testing, and walk-forward survival.
- Live capital exposes the gap between model and market; boring performance inside tolerance is the receipt you want.
- The real job is building strategy architecture that adds edges without adding hidden correlation.
Why I Switched From Discretionary to Systematic Trading
January 2025: I looked away from discretionary trading and went all in on building systems. The lessons came in thick and fast. Going systematic moved all of my workflow somewhere else. The chart time collapsed; the research time tripled. I swapped the pace of managing a live position for the slow grind of building things that survive walk-forward. Quieter days, harder problems.
April 2025: XAQP went live. First real money on the systems. Live is a different animal to backtest, and you only find the gap by standing in it. The early weeks came in within tolerance of the models, which sounds boring and felt enormous. Boring is the receipt you want.
Boring is the receipt you want.
What Actually Changes When You Go Fully Systematic
The middle stretch was about adding strategies without adding correlation. Running one system is easy. Running twenty-eight that don't all fall over on the same regime is the actual job. Most of that work went on making sure the edges I had weren't secretly the same trade wearing different clothes.

When a third party with their own capital and their own risk models looks at your book and decides to allocate, that hits differently to a backtest telling you you're on to something.
The Biggest Lesson After 18 Months of Systematic Trading
The thing nobody warns you about: the more it works, the more aware you become of how far there still is to go. Capacity I haven't used. Strategies I haven't built. Regimes I haven't been tested in. Progress in this game feels slow and invisible right up until the curve bends.
I build for the architecture now, then let it run while I get on with my life. Eighteen months in, that's the trade I'd make again every time.
